Elsie is een album over smachten naar liefde, maar die telkens onbeantwoord zien. Of kapot zien gaan, zoals in het geweldige Black Betty & The Moon: ‘Look at Black Betty, what they’re tyin’ to you / You did the very thing baby, that I ask you not to do / Now you got yourself caught in this silk spiderweb / I hope the money fills the holes, can see the roof is caving in.’ Brian Fallon wilde zich wel eens Tom Waits voelen. Dat is met Elsie meer dan gelukt. Een prachtig, soms ietwat bombastisch gearrangeerd, album dat met I Believe Jesus Brought Us Together de mooiste verstilde afsluiter ooit heeft.
